My run for the Irish Kidney Association is inspired by the health journey of my older brother, Daire. In 2016 Daire was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition called Iga Nephropathy, he had 30% kidney function. From then he required ongoing medical monitoring and treatment to try prevent any further decline in his kidney function. In early 2021 Daire's kidney function fell below 10%, it was at this time he needed to begin peritoneal dialysis, at home, through the night, every single night. This kept him alive but at a significant cost to his quality of life. Daire was then assessed by Beaumont Hospital, to be placed on the transplant waiting list. Once he was deemed a suitable candidate, my mam and dad nominated themselves as potential kidney donors and went for tests and assessments. My mam was accepted as a suitable living donor, and their surgery was planned for 2021. Thankfully all went well and the surgery has been a great success! Living donations have a life changing impact, not just improving quality of life, but also greatly enhancing long-term health outcomes for recipients. This year, Daire and I are taking on the Dublin Marathon together, to support the IKA, raise funds for this great association, and keep promoting the conversation about organ donation.
