Mark Murphy fundraising for The Mater Hospital Foundation in Irish Life Dublin Marathon 2026
Fundraiser Blurb This October, I’ll be running the Dublin Marathon to raise money for the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital in Dublin — a place that means an enormous amount to me and my family. In 2022, my sister Stephaine suffered a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) as a result of viral myocarditis and an electrolyte disturbance. She was young, fit and, as far as we knew, healthy. One moment life was completely normal, and the next our family found ourselves facing something none of us could have imagined. The care she received in the CCU, and the expertise, support and dedication she received throughout her recovery and all the care that followed, was truly exceptional. The team at the Mater guided her and our family through an incredibly frightening and uncertain time, and we will always be incredibly grateful to everyone who played a part in getting her to where she is today. Running the Dublin Marathon is my way of saying thank you, while raising funds to support the CCU and the vital work they continue to do for patients and their families. I also want to raise awareness that serious heart conditions can affect young, otherwise fit and healthy people. My sister’s experience was a stark reminder that being young and fit doesn’t make you immune to serious cardiac problems, and that conditions such as myocarditis can have devastating consequences. The marathon will be a challenge, but it’s one I’m incredibly proud to take on for a reason that means so much to me and my family. If you’re able to donate, no matter how small, I’d be hugely grateful. Every contribution will help support the CCU and the care they provide. And if you can’t donate, simply sharing this fundraiser and helping raise awareness would mean a great deal. Thank you for reading our story, and for supporting me as I take on 26.2 miles for a team of people my family will never forget. ❤️
