Mikey McDonald fundraising for Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Ireland
The reason I’m running this marathon is deeply personal. Three years ago, my son Luca was born with Spina Bifida. From the moment he arrived, he’s shown a level of strength and resilience that humbles me every single day. While most of us move through life without thinking twice about the simple things, Luca faces challenges that require courage, patience, and determination — and he does it all with a spirit that inspires everyone around him. Watching him navigate a world that isn’t always built for children with additional needs has changed me. It’s made me more aware, more grateful, and more driven to do something that can make even a small difference. That’s why I’m running this marathon. Every mile represents a piece of his journey. Every step is a reminder of the battles he fights quietly, bravely, and without complaint. If he can face his challenges with that kind of heart, then I can certainly push myself through 26.2 miles. I’m running to honour him. I’m running to support families like ours. I’m running because kids like Luca deserve every bit of help, visibility, and support we can give them. This marathon isn’t just a race for me — it’s a tribute to my son and to the strength he shows every day.
