Kenneth Keegan fundraising for Friends of the Coombe

*ORIGINAL GOAL - €2,500… SMASHED!! Hi, I'm Ken — proud dad to identical twin girls, Freya and Phoebe, who you see in the photos. Born on the 3rd of January 2025, at just 26 weeks, a full 14 weeks premature, our girls have already shown more strength and courage than most of us do in a lifetime. Due to complications in the womb, they arrived via planned C-section and faced an incredibly tough start to life. Now, just over three months later, Freya is finally home, and Phoebe, having recently undergone a heart procedure, continues to make strong progress. Both girls are fighting every single day — and they wouldn't be here without the extraordinary care and dedication of the staff in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Coombe. The tireless work of the NICU team has been nothing short of life-saving. Words can’t fully express our gratitude, but I want to try — by running a marathon to raise funds that will directly support the Coombe’s NICU. With your help, I'm hoping to raise €2,500 (or more!) to help provide essential equipment for both babies and mothers. Right now, the NICU is under-resourced. For example, when Rosie, the girls' mam, was expressing milk, she had to wait two days for a breast pump to become available. In such a stressful time, that kind of wait simply shouldn't happen, at no fault of the hospital. Each hospital-grade breast pump (Medela Symphony) costs around €800 — so with your generosity, we’re aiming to fund at least three new pumps. Every donation, big or small, brings us closer to making a real difference for future parents and their little fighters. Let’s make it happen — for Freya, Phoebe, and all the babies yet to come.

About Friends of the Coombe

Friends of the Coombe is a registered charity that was established in 1982 to assist the development of the Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital, support its vital research programmes and enhance the care it gives to patients and their families. Since it was founded in 1826, the Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital has distinguished itself as a world-class medical centre of excellence, providing care for babies and women of all ages. The hospital is one of the largest and most comprehensive providers of women and infant healthcare in Europe and, as a national referral hospital, takes care of patients with the most complex of obstetric, paediatric and gynaecological conditions from right across the country and, in some instances, from across the island of Ireland.
