John Phelan fundraising for Diabetes Ireland
This October, I'm running the Irish Life Dublin Marathon 2026 — this challenge is incredibly meaningful to me. 26.2 miles. That's the distance between comfort and courage, between an ordinary day and a moment that could truly change lives. I've lived with Type 1 Diabetes for 38 years taking 4 injections every day - over 55,000 injections since diagnosis at the age of 12 - currently using modern Insulin Toujeo. In that time, I've witnessed incredible advances in how Type 1 Diabetes is managed — advances that have given me not just better control, but a better life. The Dexcom G7 System I now use to monitor real-time glucose readings has been a game changer for me. None of it would have been possible without the unwavering support of Diabetes Ireland, my endocrinologists, nurses, GPs, and of course, my family, friends, teachers and work colleagues who have stood by me every step of the way. I'm raising funds for Diabetes Ireland to help them continue their vital work — especially for young children newly diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and their parents, who are navigating the overwhelming reality of what this condition means. They're wondering: Will my child be okay? Can they still play sports? Go to sleepovers? Live a normal life etc etc? The education, support, and community Diabetes Ireland provides can transform fear into confidence, and uncertainty into hope. Every mile I run is a reminder of why I'm doing this — to make a real difference for those who need it most. It's not just about crossing a finish line; it's about showing up, pushing through, and turning effort into impact. Your support — whether it's a donation, a share, or simply cheering me on — means more than words can say. Together, we can help ensure that no family faces this journey alone. Every mile matters. Every gesture helps. Every step is a reminder that with the right support, Type 1 Diabetes doesn't define you — it's just part of your story. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
