In 2014, aged 40, Alex O’Shea ran his first Cork City Marathon—not just to finish, but to break the Guinness World Record running in full firefighter gear. Finishing in 3:41:10, he smashed the record and raised funds for Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind, earning the nickname “The Running Fireman.” A father of four and full-time firefighter, he proved preparation was key.
Since then, Alex has become a leading Irish ultra-runner, winning national medals across multiple distances, representing Ireland five times, and competing in extreme races worldwide. In 2018, he ran 32 marathons in 32 counties in under 16 days, while continuing to support Cork events as runner, pacer, and volunteer.
In 2027, for Cork Fire Brigade’s 150th anniversary, Alex will attempt another record—this time in full gear plus breathing apparatus, adding major physical challenges.
He’s inviting 150 people to join the “150 Club” to raise funds together, offering training, support, and team rewards.
