Event Description:

This one day course is aimed at Strength and Conditioning coaches, Fitness Instructors and Personal Trainers who are interested in improving their knowledge and practice of exercise prescription and training for middle-aged and older adults, including those at risk for functional decline.

The content will be delivered in-person in the Pavillons Building at the Sport Ireland Campus (Blanchardstown), with a combination of lecture-style presentations, practical demonstrations in the gym setting, and small group case study discussions that will cover:

• The importance of mitigating declines in skeletal muscle mass and function for healthy aging

• Principles of exercise training and prescription in older adults and individuals at risk of functional decline

• Current guidelines and contemporary research on emerging approaches for exercise prescription in older adults

• The emerging concept of "exercise snacking"

• The interaction of exercise and nutrition in skeletal muscle health in older age

• The role of behaviour change techniques in supporting older adults' engagement with exercise

• Planning single exercise training sessions and programming exercise training interventions targeting improved muscle function in older adults

Learning will be supported by a pre-course reading and resources pack, and all presented materials will be provided to attendees upon completion of the course.
