Distress Centre Calgary (DCC) is a compassionate, community-rooted charity dedicated to ensuring that no one has to face crisis alone. For over 50 years, this trusted organization has provided free, accessible support to individuals and families across Calgary and Southern Alberta dealing with emotional distress, anxiety, isolation, suicidal thoughts, relationship difficulties, financial stress, houselessness, and other challenges that can feel overwhelming.

At the heart of DCC’s work is a belief in the dignity and worth of every person. Their services — including 24-hour crisis support by phone, text, and online chatprofessional counsellingyouth peer support through ConnecTeen, and navigation and referrals via 211 and coordinated programs like SORCe — are all offered at no cost to those who reach out. These supports are delivered by a skilled team of trained volunteers and mental health professionals who listen without judgment and help connect people to the resources they need.

Distress Centre Calgary’s mission is simple but powerful: to provide compassionate, accessible crisis support that enhances the health, well-being, and resiliency of individuals in distress, helping to build stronger, more connected communities where everyone is heard and supported.

One of the most meaningful ways the Centre raises awareness and support for mental health and suicide prevention is through its participation in the annual Darkness into Light Walk — a global fundraising and solidarity event rooted in hope, remembrance, and community.

Originally founded in Ireland by the mental health charity Pieta House in 2009, Darkness into Light has grown into a worldwide movement. Participants around the globe gather before dawn to walk a 5-kilometre route together, moving from darkness into the first light of morning. The symbolism is central: walking from the darkness of night into the light of dawn represents resilience, hope, survival, and the shared journey from despair toward healing and possibility.

In Calgary, the event brings together hundreds of people — individuals, families, teams, volunteers, and supporters — united in purpose: to honour those affected by suicide, celebrate the strength of those still fighting, and raise critical funds for local and international suicide prevention supports. The early-morning setting, usually starting while it is still dark, creates a reflective and powerful atmosphere where participants walk side-by-side, fostering connection, remembrance, and shared commitment.

By joining Darkness into Light, Distress Centre Calgary helps shine a spotlight on the reality that mental health struggles affect people from all walks of life, and that together we can create a community where reaching out for help is met with compassion, not stigma. Funds raised through the walk support DCC’s life-changing programs — including crisis intervention, counselling services, youth outreach, and community navigation — ensuring that support is there when people need it most.

Darkness into Light is much more than a walk — it’s a shared experience that brings light to the conversation around mental health, affirms that help is available, and reminds us all that we do not have to face our struggles in isolation.

Please remember to email us after the Darkness into Light Walk in order to receive your tax receipt. You will need proof of donation.
