‘Ready to Go Orienteering’ is an Orienteering Ireland initiative, aimed at introducing and promoting the sport of orienteering into schools and provide teachers with the necessary training and resources to successfully implement the programme in a school setting.

In return for full commitment to the programme, each school will receive a subsidised teacher training day, a resource folder, equipment pack, numerous school event opportunities and the option of a school mapping service (additional cost)

  • In Person Date: Wed, 1st March | 10am-3pm
  • Venue: Mayfield Sports Complex
Programme Options:
  • Course Attendance, Resource Folder, Equipment Pack, Event (10 kites, 10 punches and 100 control cards): €70 (one teacher place)
  • School Mapping: Additonal cost depending on the size and location of the school
Programme outline

Step 1: School registers to participate in the Orienteering Schools Programme by completing the programme registration form.

Step 2: Registration will be acknowledged by Cork Sports Partnership.

Step 3: Successful schools will be contacted by Cork Sports Partnership to confirm acceptance on to the programme. Remaining schools will be contacted and placed on a waiting list for future phases of the programme.

Step 4: Registered teachers will attend the Ready to Go Orienteering Training Course (online - 1 hours & face to face - 4 hours)

 ‘Ready to go’ Orienteering will provide teachers with the knowledge to:

  • Introduce pupils to the basic skills of orienteering in a fun and exciting way
  • Identify where orienteering can be introduced to the school curriculum
  • Use games and activity cards that progress pupils from classroom lessons to participation in simple orienteering competitions and events
  • Explore and develop Outdoor and Adventure activities on the school grounds and/or local environment
  • Prepare pupils to compete in schools orienteering events in public parks 

Step 5: Depending on which programme option Schools selected, arrangements will be made to deliver remaining components of the programme with each school. E.g. mapping, equipment packs etc.

Step 6: School teacher delivers regular Orienteering activities on schools grounds.
