Sprint Relay Workshop with National
Sprint Relay Workshop Athlone IT
7th April 2019
10am - 1pm
Relays are an excellent way of creating a team environment among club members young and old. Athletics is largely individual sport and relays are one of the only opportunities to work as a team in the sport. Relays have the ability to encourage both competitive and recreational athletes which in turn makes our clubs more fun and engaging places to be.
Relays are an important part of our LTAD model and can implemented as part of any training session with many different variants. For example, in recent seasons the national relay programme has made positive progress. The 2018 season alone saw six national teams compete at major championships. Three national records were achieved by the U20 Women’s 4x100m, U20 Men’s 4x100m and Senior Women’s 4x100m.
The U20 women’s 4 x 100m also created history in 2018, claiming a World Championship silver medal, Ireland’s first global outdoor relay medal.
We are delighted to have this relay workshop lead and delivered by Karen Kirk who guided the Irish women's 4 x 100m relay team to their historic silver. Karen has worked with relays from youth to senior level, and encourages those coaching relays at club and schools level to attend.
**Please note this workshop is directed at coaches. Athletics Ireland will provide athletes for demonstration purposes on the day.
