Zara Kate Paterson fundraising for Irish Heart Foundation in Analog Devices Cork City Marathon 2026

My Why: A little over two years ago, we lost our wonderful dad, Jack Hornibrook. Dad had a huge heart, in every sense of the phrase, though it was a heart that gave him more than a few battles over the years. Thanks to the extraordinary care and dedication of our Mum Gill, alongside the incredible cardiology team at the Mater Private Hospital Cork, we were fortunate to have far more time with him than we might otherwise have had. Those extra years, conversations, laughs, and memories are something our family will always treasure. We know not every family is so lucky. That’s why I want to raise money for the amazing work of the Irish Heart Foundation supporting heart & stroke patients and their families across Ireland, and helping more people get the care and support they desperately need. My What : On May 31st, I’ll be taking on my first marathon in my hometown at the Analog Devices Cork City Marathon and, if my knees have any say in the matter, possibly my last. I plan to run it as competitively as these ageing bones will allow, because Dad would expect nothing less. A gifted sportsman across many disciplines and fiercely proud Corkonian, he’s been front and centre in my mind during every freezing early-morning training run when staying in bed seemed like the far more sensible option. There have been moments on those runs where I could almost hear his “encouragement”— similar to his hockey support in times past. If you know, you know! Always running with a background track of his classics like ‘the early bird catches the worm’ and ‘where’s the fire?!’ Thank you so much for taking the time to this read this. Your support, whether through a donation, encouragement, or simply cheering me on, means more than I can express.

About Irish Heart Foundation

Every hour someone in Ireland suffers from a stroke. Every day, hundreds of Irish people are diagnosed with heart disease. The lives of these people are often cut tragically short. Many are left disabled. Almost 9,000 people die each year, making heart disease and stroke one of the nation’s biggest killers. It shouldn’t be this way and this fact forms our reason for being. We are the nation’s heart and stroke charity. Our mission is to effect positive change in the lifestyles of Irish people, to achieve better outcomes for those affected by heart disease and stroke and to challenge when the health of our nation is put at risk. We empower people to live longer, healthier lives. Thank you for choosing to support us.
