Richard Waters fundraising for Irish Cancer Society and Arthritis Ireland

Hi there and thanks for taking the time to visit my fundraising page! Along with my friend Sophia, I will be completing my first 5km race in the Rathfarnham 5k 2025 in just 2 weeks on Sept 28th, then taking part in the Savills Sandymount Night Run 10km (?!?) on Oct 21st. I hope you'll help me raise money for my chosen charities of the Irish Cancer Society and Arthritis Ireland. Why these choices? Arthritis Ireland: I've never been much of a runner. Something I don't put out there often is that I have psoriatic arthritis, which really kicked into gear when I was 20ish and living in Swansea. For a few years, stairs were a huge obstacle and I was living with constant pain. Thankfully, I take a weekly injection that has me pretty close to pain and joint issue free, but I was warned by a nurse to be very cautious of exercise because of my knees. That caution and the pandemic really allowed my weight to get out of control, so a year and a half ago I made some very active choices to shed some of the weight and get myself in a better place, and surprisingly, running ended up a big part of that. Recently, a doctor told me he was happy for me to do the running, so here we are! Irish Cancer Society: Cancer is an ongoing awfulness that pretty much no one gets away from being affected in some way. These past few years have seen a lot of family and friends go through the fights. Some managing through, some sadly not, and some still battling strong as I type, and this is the little bit of support for their struggles I can give. I have definite limitations, but I'm confident I can do the 5km, so my goal is to run it in 33 mins or less (something I have never done). The 10km is a bit more insane, so I'm hoping I can just achieve that, ideally in less than 75 mins! If you can, please help me reach my goal (which will be split 50/50). If you can't contribute yourself, maybe considering sharing my page? Thanks a lot and I'll be the one sweating and puffing profusely! Rich

About Irish Cancer Society

Cancer is the most common cause of death in Ireland with more than 9,000 people dying each year. That's almost 25 people dying from cancer every day across Ireland. An average of 1 person every hour. However, thanks to earlier detection, improved care and targeted treatments, more people are surviving cancer than ever before. Today, there are 200,000 cancer survivors in Ireland. The Irish Cancer Society are working towards a future where nobody dies from cancer, and everyone affected by the disease will have access to world class treatment and support. Typically receiving only 5% of income from the Government, your support helps provide key services to ensure no one has to face cancer alone and funds vital cancer research with over €30 million invested since 2010.
