Patrick Hegarty fundraising for 22q11 Ireland

In October 2026, I’ll be running the Dublin Marathon — my first — to raise funds for 22q11 Ireland. I’m running for my wonderful little nephew, Rufus, who was born with 22q11 deletion syndrome, often shortened to “22q”. It’s a genetic condition caused by a small missing section of chromosome 22. 22q can affect the heart, immune system, feeding, speech, physical development, learning and mental health. Children and adults with 22q often need support from many different medical and developmental specialists throughout their lives. The condition isn’t always visible, but it is complex, relatively poorly understood and can be difficult for families to navigate. For Rufus and his family, 22q11 Ireland has been incredibly valuable. Through the charity, they are able to connect with other families who understand shared challenges, and learn from their experiences. 22q11 Ireland also plays a vital role in supporting the dedicated 22q clinic at Children’s Health Ireland in Crumlin, helping coordinate the many areas of care that children with 22q can require. That knowledgeable, joined-up support has been a lifeline for families like ours. As Rufus’s uncle, I’m hugely grateful for everything 22q11 Ireland has done for him, for our family and for so many others. Running the Dublin Marathon is my chance to give something back and help the charity continue supporting families, connecting the 22q community and advocating for better lifelong care. Every donation, however big or small, will make a difference. Thank you for supporting me — and, most importantly, supporting Rufus and the wider 22q community. Thanks a mill Paddy
