Team O'Boyle- Help Us Make a Difference in the Fight Against Oesophageal Cancer fundraising for Breakthrough Cancer Research

Hi everyone, On June 1st, 2025, we’re participating in the Cork City Half Marathon in memory of our beloved Séamus O’Boyle (Séimí), a wonderful husband and dad, who we lost to oesophageal cancer in May 2024. We’re raising funds for Breakthrough Cancer Research, with all proceeds going to the All Ireland Cancer Network (AllCaN) Oesophageal Programme. This cause is close to our hearts. Oesophageal cancer has one of the lowest survival rates. Ireland and the UK have the some of the highest incidence rates of oesophageal adenocarcinoma worldwide. The five-year survival rate in the ROI is 24%, and in NI, it's just 19%. That’s why research is so crucial. AllCaN is working to improve early detection, treatment, and survival rates for oesophageal cancer and other low-survival cancers like liver and brain cancer. Every euro raised will support this vital research, bringing hope to those affected. Thank you for your support! ❤️ Team O'Boyle- Deirdre, Eamon, Aoife, Oisín, Emma and Aidan

About Breakthrough Cancer Research

Breakthrough Cancer Research is an Irish medical research charity focused on cancer, working hard to make sure our family, friends, and communities have access to the best treatments for cancer and never have to hear the words, 'there is no hope.' Breakthrough invests in world-class research to impact the quality of life for people with cancer, and to save lives. Particularly focusing on improving the outcomes for cancers that are currently poorly served by available treatment options.

About Cork City Marathon 2025

Organised by Cork City Council, the marathon has three distances: the Full Marathon, Half Marathon, and 10K race. The routes weave through Cork City’s scenic and vibrant streets and suburbs, past iconic landmarks and along the bustling quays. The incredible support from Corkonians lining the streets, paired with the camaraderie among participants, guarantees a memorable day for all.

The Cork City Marathon is open to all, from elite athletes chasing records to first-time runners tackling personal goals. It's more than a race—it’s about community, resilience, and making a difference.

Building on the €200,000 raised for 58 charity partners in 2024, we aim to double this target in the coming years. With our new tagline ‘Your Race, Their Hope.’ We encourage participants to run for causes close to their hearts, making every stride on June 1 count towards vital, life-changing work.

As a full member of AIMs the Cork marathon is IAAF certified.
