Mary Sheehan fundraising for Irish Heart Foundation
On June 2 2024, I am running the VHI Women's Mini Marathon for the Irish Heart Foundation. I've had an internal defibrillator (ICD) since 2015. I had it implanted after going into a cardiac arrest one morning before school in sixth year. My brilliant neighbour Seán Leydon quickly started chest compressions and I was resuscitated using an external defibrillator (AED). In July 2023, I had a cardiac arrest while on holiday in Greece. Within seconds, my ICD kicked in to defibrillate me and I was quickly back to myself. However, for most people who go into a sudden cardiac arrest, whether they be at home or kicking a football on a pitch, they will die within minutes without external help. The Irish Heart Foundation runs an extensive CPR-training network and, in 2022, spent €1.3 million on CPR alone and trained 60,000 people. Please consider donating to this amazing charity and sign up to learn how to do chest compressions and use an AED. Thank you 🫶
