Kerrie's Half Marathon for Brainwaves NI fundraising for Brainwaves NI in Phoenix Energy Belfast City Half Marathon 2026
Despite having found a love of running, a half marathon (13.1 miles / 21.1 KM) is WAY beyond anything I have ever attempted, or will attempt, again. So to make sure I don't chicken out, I am running for Brainwaves NI. They have been a massive support to us through having had 2 of our 3 children affected by brain tumours of different types, with different symptoms, so we know how important this charity is in NI especially. Our first child, Ewan, was diagnosed with his brain tumour in 2010 aged 5, and has undergone 2 sets of 10-12 hour brain surgeries to remove his tumour. He is now 21, about to start his final year of University and is tumour free :) Our second child, Evie, was diagnosed with her brain tumour after developing seizures around the age of 8 in 2016, and diagnosed with epilepsy as a result age 13. After a long, hard fought road, she was eventually referred to the Children's Epilepsy Surgery Service in the north of England and after numerous trips across, she underwent her brain surgery age 16. She is now 18, completely seizure free, has passed her driving test and is about to start university and is tumour free :) With Brainwaves NI, we were able to meet other families with shared, but different experiences, which is both humbling and inspiring, and we always come away feeling 'lucky' that our kids have survived and are able to continue with their lives as they move into adulthood. Others are not so fortunate. I have also benefited from some counselling offered by the charity, which helped me stay sane, along with my running, through some very challenging years! Brainwwaves NI is a charity lead by volunteers who not only provide support for families and their carers, but also help fund vital research into brain tumours at Queen's University in Belfast. I never normally ask for sponsorship, but if you can spare a few pounds I would be incredibly grateful and will help me towards that finish line in September! Thank you! Kerrie x
