I’m running the Dublin Half Marathon for One in Four, an organisation that provides support and counselling services to people who have experienced childhood sexual abuse. They do extraordinary work. Last year, the man who assaulted me when I was 8 was finally convicted. I still don’t really have the words to describe what this outcome means to me, or how it has felt to have this out in the open without shame or fear. Engaging with counselling services and eventually with the criminal justice system was really difficult but it changed my life for the better. At every stage, I was lucky to have the structural supports that meant I was able to get the help that I needed. Thousands of people experience sexual violence and never seek support, or worry they cannot afford it if they do. One in Four provides vital services and helps to dispel the shame around sexual abuse. In fundraising for them, I hope to help people who have had experiences like mine.
