Colin Mullally fundraising for Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind
15 Peaks of the Macgillycuddy Reeks in honour of the late President and Co-Founder of the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind, Jim Dennehy My grandfather and godfather Jim Dennehy passed away peacefully just a few days ago on the 11th of September 2026. Having lost his sight in 1968 and experiencing firsthand the lack of services available to visually impaired people in Ireland, he went to England and availed of their Guide Dog service. Not content with simply helping himself regain indepedence, he co-founded with the late Mary Dunlop, the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind, a trailblazer charity which provides a wide range of services, including but not limited to through training and providing of Guide Dogs, Assistance Dogs, Independence training and lobbying for disability rights and access in Ireland. To honour Jim's legacy and the work he's done for the IGDB, I will undertake a 26km hike through the Macgillycuddy Reeks on the 30th of September (weather permitting), attempting to climb the 15 tallest peaks in the range, including Carrauntoohil, Beenkeragh, Caher, Maolán Buí and the Big Gun. All proceeds raised are donated directly to the IGDB to help fund the amazing work they do. 85% of its income it receives is through donations and fundraising. This money will help fund its work in changing lives. This includes the 52 working dog partnerships it maintains, hiring and paying 80 staff, the training and development of Guide, Assistance and Community working dogs which costs approximately €52,000 for a single dog. The IGDB recently celebrated its 50th birthday and over those 50 years, it has created over 1760 Guide, Assistant and Community dog partnerships. Donations of any size would be much appreciated. Thank you :)
