Aoife O’Looney fundraising for Irish Dogs for the Disabled

I'm raising funds for Irish Dogs for the Disabled, an incredible charity that changes lives by providing highly trained assistance dogs to children and adults living with physical disabilities. This cause is especially close to my heart because my friend Aoife lives with Friedreich's Ataxia (FA), a rare progressive neurological condition. While Aoife is currently waiting to access the life-changing medication Skyclarys, she has already experienced a huge positive change thanks to her assistance dog Rodney (pictured above) from Irish Dogs for the Disabled. Rodney has given Aoife greater confidence, independence, companionship and support in everyday life. From helping with daily tasks to providing reassurance and encouraging her to get out and about, the impact has been truly life-changing—not only for her but for those around her. Irish Dogs for the Disabled relies heavily on donations to train and provide these amazing dogs, ensuring more people can experience the same life-changing support. Dogs for the Disabled is a National Charity established in 2007 and the only one of its kind in Ireland. Enhancing the quality of lives for children and adults, who have varying degrees of physical disabilities. Our mission is to provide fully trained Assistance Dogs to assist in everyday activities and in doing so improving their quality of life. Our Assistance Dogs are provided free of charge and our charity receives no government funding. We have 200 dogs nationwide and 5 year waiting list for our assistance dogs.85% of our clients are children between the ages of 6 – 12years living with severe physical disabilities which affect every aspect of their lives from independence to social interaction. Our Assistance Dogs are specially trained to assist in many ways, some of which are opening/closing doors; assist with dressing/undressing; sending of help; retrieve dropped items like keys or telephones; empty the washing machine: fetch the post; switch lights on/off etc

About Streets of Galway 8km 2026

The 40th Streets of Galway 8K on 8 August 2026 is an 8km road race, organised by Galway City Harriers around the streets of Galway City.
Since its inception in 1986 the event has grown into one of the most prestigious road races in the country, yet remains true to its original motto of Sport for All, as many locals and visitors take on the event year in year out.
The event will bring thousands of participants onto the streets of our city and suburbs into what is a fantastic event for the city.
The Streets is a fast and flat 8k race routing around Galway City, Salthill and the famous Claddagh.
It attracts thousands of runners from all walks of life to the city on a superb summers evening in the City of the Tribes.
Race Start is 7pm at Fr Griffin Road in the city centre and Race finish is at South Park. HQ is the Claddagh Hall at Nimmos Pier. Entry is open now on Eventmaster at;
